Mahbubnagar, September 8, 2026: An awareness programme on Antenatal Screening for Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia was organised at the IDOC Meeting Hall, Mahbubnagar Collectorate, by the District Medical and Health Office (DMHO), Mahbubnagar, in collaboration with the Thalassemia & Sickle Cell Society (TSCS).
The programme focused on prevention, early detection, genetic counselling, and appropriate management of inherited blood disorders, supporting the goal of a Thalassemia-Free Telangana.
The sessions were conducted by Dr. Suman Jain, Founder Member, Chief Medical Research Officer & Secretary, TSCS; Mrs. Ratnavali, Founder Member & Vice President, TSCS; and Dr. G. Padma, Head of Research, TSCS. They highlighted the importance of systematic antenatal screening, carrier identification, timely counselling, and preventive interventions.
DMHO Dr. Srinivasulu and Programme Officer Dr. Shankar attended along with Medical Officers, Community Health Officers, Health Supervisors, and Laboratory Technicians. Around 180 healthcare personnel participated actively in the programme.
TSCS has so far screened approximately 25,000 antenatal women in Mahbubnagar, identifying a carrier frequency of around 2.5%. These efforts help enable early identification, counselling, and preventive measures to reduce affected births.
The TSCS team was felicitated by the DMHO in recognition of its contribution to antenatal screening and prevention. Participants were also encouraged to attend the GANSID International Congress 2026, to be held at HICC-Novotel, Hyderabad, from October 23–25, 2026, to further strengthen knowledge, collaboration, and professional engagement in the field.
